Our new web site is generating lots of interest, so we have decided to share with you some of our special projects. We will show you some of the challenges of the project, how we restored it, and give you some of the history about the piece. Antiques are usually beautiful works of art in themselves, but to know the history behind it can make it more appealing and desirable.
We will also try to keep you informed about trade shows, new wood working products and other wood working information. Be sure to come back to visit often.
Fred
Workshop Sponsored By The Smithsonian Institution And The National Institute Of Wood Finishing
Fred recently attended a furniture conservation workshop sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution and the National Institute of Wood Finishing in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The workshop, led by Donald C. Williams, Senior Furniture Conservator for the Smithsonian Institution, focused on conservation techniques to repair damaged veneer surfaces, fabricating missing parts and repairing structural damage to furniture. While attending the workshop, McLean performed repairs on a 19th century German design bentwood chair.
Woodworking Class At McLean’S Refinishing June 18, 2005
Small woodworking classes have become quite popular in the Arhens area. Several of the local craftsmen and beginners get together, sometimes and our shop and sometimes at other shops around town to discuss new woodworking techniques or new products. Today’s class was held at McLean’s Refinishing and the subjects of discussion were wood glues and wood moisture content. Click here for the rest of the story...
Athens-Clarke County, Georgia Fire Department Table
This table has been used by the Athens-Clarke County , Georgia Fire Dept. since 1890. It is located at Fire Hall #1 ( headquarters) . This is their main dinning hall table. It is used everyday and is the center piece for all of their meetings , meals, breaks, kids birth day parties, etc.
The table is 9' long and 60" wide. circa 1890, It is made of quarter sawn White Oak or "Tiger Oak" Notice the large yellow rays in the wood. That's where the wood gets it nick name "Tiger Oak". The table needed to be completely restored. It had several cracks in the top from 110 years of everyday use. Every board in the table was split open, edge joined, and re-glued. The firemen were extremely proud to get the restored table back home and put into use for the next 100 years.
It was a real pleasure to be a part of this project and to work with Athens-Clarke's finest.
